Photo Sessions as Therapy: Why Stepping in Front of the Camera Feels Like a Breakthrough

Most people don’t like being photographed. I’ve lost count of how many times I’ve heard, “I hate photos of myself.” And it doesn’t matter who you are. I’ve had powerhouse CEOs crumble in front of the lens. I’ve seen the most stunning, confident people suddenly pick themselves apart—"My nose looks weird," "I should’ve waited until I lost weight."

I get it. The camera feels like a staring contest you didn’t sign up for.

But here’s something I’ve learned: a photo session isn’t just about taking pictures. It’s about learning to see yourself differently.

Why Do We Feel So Vulnerable in Photos?

There’s something about being looked at—really looked at—that brings our insecurities to the surface. The lens becomes a mirror, reflecting back not just how we look, but how we feel about ourselves. And for many, that’s uncomfortable.

The Shift: What Happens During a Session

The first few minutes? Awkward. That’s normal. But then something beautiful happens. We talk. We laugh. I guide, I adjust. And slowly, people stop posing and start being. That’s where the magic is.

I’ve seen it time and time again—by the end of the session, people walk away lighter. Energized. Like they’ve let go of something. And they have.

Because when we allow ourselves to be seen—without the filters of self-judgment—it’s freeing. It’s a reminder that we are more than our perceived “flaws.” And sometimes, that’s exactly what we need.

So, If You’ve Been Putting It Off…

If you’ve ever said, “I’ll book a session when I lose weight.” If you’ve ever cringed at photos of yourself…If you’ve ever wanted to see yourself differently…

This is your sign. You may not need therapy, but a photo session may just do the trick.

(And yes, I need to take my own advice—I’ve been putting off my own headshot for the same reason. 🙃)

Because showing up for yourself? It matters. And I promise, it’s worth it.
