Looking for good photoshoot locations near Chapel Hill? Whether you're planning family portraits, senior photos, or just want beautiful backdrops for your next session, Chapel Hill and Carrboro offer incredible variety. From iconic university settings to rustic farms and urban murals, here are my top 10 photography locations in the area.

Let me start with the fact that I am terribly biased because I live here. I love Chapel Hill, and it has so many good photoshoot spots that you have to be uber local for me to pinpoint a particular corner of a particular street or GPS coordinates of a place where I know the light is particularly good at a particular time of a particular season. If you are, drop me a line and we can discuss it in detail. But for the sake of this blog article, or if you just recently relocated, let me give you some ideas.

A Few General Statements Before We Turn to the List

Hills are photogenic. In general. Any hills, even a usual road when it turns and goes down and up right behind you, make a good location. This is where Chapel Hill comes in handy. It's all in the name, hence the abundant choices.

Sometimes a simple bush can be a perfect backdrop. In portrait photography, even if we photograph a group, the background is often blurred (in the photographer's world, this effect is called bokeh). So in many ways, when I'm looking for a good background, I'm just looking for good light at the time of the shoot or a color. The details often don't matter. One of my favorite portraits I took was literally next to a dumpster, which happened to be surrounded by a thick row of rose bushes. Go figure.

But I also know that if you're planning a photoshoot, you're not likely to plan it around local dumpsters. So let's dive in.

My Top 10 Photo Locations in Chapel Hill and Carrboro

1. UNC Campus

Let's start with the iconic. Even if you have nothing to do with the university itself, the campus is a goldmine for photography locations.

Coker Arboretum is free and offers a large variety of backdrops. The famous 300-foot arbor walkway is currently being rebuilt (it was removed in 2022 for renovation and should reopen in 2026), but the arboretum itself remains open with gorgeous gardens, a central lawn with a 250-year-old oak tree, and seasonal blooms year-round.

Besides the arboretum, you can photograph pretty much anywhere on campus. The Sundial by the Morehead Planetarium, all the benches in the cozy shade of the oaks, and of course the Bell Tower and the most iconic of all, The Well.

2. The Carolina Inn

Steps away from The Well, you'll find yourself at the Carolina Inn. This historic hotel, built in 1924 and modeled after Mount Vernon, is known as "the University's Living Room." Whether we shoot on their picturesque front lawn during a family brunch or inside their elegant gallery hung with original artwork, it's a bulletproof option. The magnolia trees, gracefully draped windows, and Southern Colonial architecture photograph beautifully.

3. Franklin Street

If you're after an urban vibe, Franklin Street delivers. You can find vintage storefronts (Sutton's Drug Store is a favorite), brick facades, and that quintessential college town energy. Perfect for senior portraits or anyone wanting that downtown Chapel Hill feel.

4. Scott Nurkin Mural

While on Franklin, why not stop by the iconic mural by Scott Nurkin, visible from the Rosemary Street parking lot by the North Columbia Street intersection? This mural is a replica of a 1947 postcard by German illustrator Curt Teich. Nurkin was given permission and painted the mural with a Chapel Hill theme. It's colorful, local, and instantly recognizable - one of the most popular photo spots in town.

5. Merritt's Pasture

If you're after a rustic, natural vibe, this has everything. Rolling hills, tall grass, oak trees, and an occasional deer that photobombs your frame. Very sparse foot traffic, which makes it really good if you want privacy, but also a bit of a tricky parking situation, which means getting to the good spot will take a 5-10 minute hike at least.

6. Spring Haven Farm

On the rustic side, Spring Haven Farm is one of the most photogenic working farms in the area. Located on Homer Ruffin Road, this family-friendly farm is home to an impressive menagerie: baby goats (the stars of the show), Highland cows with their shaggy coats, alpacas, horses, emus, sheep, pigs, donkeys, bunnies, chickens, and ducks.

The farm offers a mix of rustic barn settings, open pastures, and wooded areas. The animals are accustomed to visitors, which makes them surprisingly cooperative photo subjects. The Highland cows alone are worth the trip—they're photogenic and distinctively fuzzy. The baby goats add spontaneous charm to any session, and the historic barn and picnic areas provide classic farm backdrops.

It's the kind of place where you can get genuine farm vibes without actually having to own a farm. Perfect for families who want that authentic pastoral look.

7. Briar Chapel

Another gorgeous planned community south of Chapel Hill, technically still Chapel Hill but bordering Pittsboro. This 1,500-acre master-planned community is massive and offers incredible variety for photography.

With 24 miles of hiking and biking trails, 20+ neighborhood parks, and 900 acres of preserved open space, Briar Chapel gives you options. Discovery Park features hammocks and outdoor art installations. Great Meadow Park is a five-acre linear space with an amphitheater, historic tobacco barn, and open pavilions. Constellation Park sits atop a hill with sweeping views. The community also features natural woodlands, ponds, and meadows throughout.

Whether you want rustic trails through the woods, open meadow backdrops, or modern park settings with architectural elements, Briar Chapel delivers. It's like having multiple location options within a single neighborhood.

8. Meadowmont Village and the Rizzo Center

Meadowmont Village offers boutique shops and cafes in a walkable New Urbanist setting, but the real photographic gem here is the Rizzo Center. Owned by UNC's Kenan-Flagler Business School, the Rizzo Center sits on 30 wooded acres with beautifully landscaped grounds and garden walking paths.

The focal point is the DuBose House, a grand Georgian Revival manor built in 1933 and listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Think two-story portico, Palladian windows, and that classic Southern elegance. The surrounding gardens, infinity pool area, and wooded walking trails offer multiple backdrops in one location, all just minutes from UNC campus.

9. Fearrington Village

Technically it's Pittsboro, but we cannot miss it. This is a hidden gem among local photography locations. It has the famous Belted Galloway cows (my kids used to call them Oreo cows), a historic silo, immaculate lawns and ponds, and gorgeous gardens surrounding the Fearrington House Inn. The inn is a Relais & Châteaux property with beautifully landscaped gardens designed by co-founder Jenny Fitch. Think English countryside meets North Carolina Piedmont. The gardens feature a formal topiary "Knot Garden," cutting gardens bursting with seasonal blooms, and winding paths that feel like stepping into a storybook. It's pastoral, elegant, and utterly photogenic.

10. Southern Village

Here is where I am the most biased, as I live here. And it offers a lot. But more importantly: everything is close. You can shoot three completely different aesthetics within a 10-minute walk, which matters when you have tired kids, limited time, or unpredictable weather.

Urban vibe? We've got you. Market Street features outdoor cafes, a movie theater, brick storefronts, and the iconic butterfly mural (created by Southern Village resident Loren Pease) that's become one of Chapel Hill's most recognizable landmarks. It's colorful, cheerful, and instantly local.

Gothic/architectural vibe? The Southern Village Methodist Church offers gorgeous architecture with clean lines and dramatic presence. It photographs beautifully and provides that timeless, elegant backdrop.

Rustic/natural? The Village Green, ponds, and hiking trails are all within a 5-minute walk from Market Street. You get open meadows, water features, wooded paths, and natural light without having to drive anywhere else.

One location, 3-4 completely different styles at your fingertips. No car required between setups. This is the ultimate efficiency play, and when you're working with kids or on a tight schedule, proximity is everything.
